About Safety Mats Rugged safety mats are designed to protect machine operators against some of the possible hazards and dangers of the contemporary manufacturing environment. A simple method for ensuring safety of employers who work around dangerous machines is to utilize these Universal Safety Mat systems (UM series safety mat combined with an MC3, MC4 or MC6). A safety mat system provides freedom, flexibility and a reduction in operator fatigue when compared to conventional guarding methods, i.e. interlocked and perimeter fences and pullback restraints. In addition, complete visibility of, and access to, the work area is maintained. It is easy to understand the operation of the safety mat. It is an uncomplicated, usually open switch. The switch closes when a specific minimum weight is applied to the safety mat. This causes a signal to be sent to the safety mat controller, who sends a stop signal to the guarded machine. Each safety mat transmits four wires to the safety mat controller. This grants the surplus needed to examine the wires for open circuits due to improper wiring or damage to the safety mat wires. Ordinary jobs such as machine set-up, maintenance and repair can be simplified with safety mats. Applications for safety mats include: welding robots, robotic work cells, material handling, punches, presses, manufacturing and assembling machinery and packaging machinery.
